Quick FAQs
The length of your trip to Greece depends on how much you want to see and how much time you have to work with. Keep in mind that traveling between the mainland and the islands can take longer than you might expect, so it’s important to plan ahead and account for travel days.
If it’s your first visit to Athens, set aside at least 2–3 days to explore the city and take day trips to other mainland destinations. From there, plan to spend another 2–3 nights on each Greek island you want to visit, anticipating travel time between locations.

Be sure to visit during shoulder season if you want to avoid crowds and uncomfortably hot temperatures. We visited in April and found the temperatures comfortable enough for long pants, but I’ve since learned from locals that September offers the perfect balance of ideal weather and warm water temperatures if you’re interested in going for a swim!
COMING SOON: Visiting Greece in April: what to expect
To my surprise, Greece was not as expensive as other European destinations I’ve visited in the past. Especially when it comes to food. For example, I’ve often spent €20–30 per meal in France at an average restaurant. While visiting Athens, I enjoyed meals of equal or better quality, often with live music or stunning views, for less! Even in Santorini, where prices tend to be higher, I was well under my food budget most days.
Our largest expenses were spent on travel and activities – which can vary depending on your budget! In the end, our 1 week trip to Greece cost roughly 1,200 euros per person, all included.
COMING SOON: Greece Budget Breakdown
There are several ways to travel around the Greek islands, and your choice will depend on your budget and the time you have.
Ferries are one of the most popular options and offer a scenic way to travel between the islands. Standard ferries can take longer depending on your destination, but high-speed ferries are available at a higher cost. You can compare routes and book tickets through platforms Ferryhopper or Greekferries.
Alternatively, you can fly from the mainland or between larger islands. Airlines such as Sky Express, Aegean, and Olympic offer direct flights, though prices vary, and carry-on luggage may come with additional fees.
