Quick FAQs

Most major destinations in Belgium can be visited within 4-5 days, depending on how much you want to see. You can expect to spend a day each in Brussels and Bruges and a half day or so in Ghent and Antwerp. If you want to explore more underrated destinations, such as the historic Flanders Fields, the hidden gem of Dinant, or the beautiful blue forest, add a few extra days accordingly!

Belgium is one of the most underrated countries in Europe in my opinion! It is often overlooked in favour of its neighbours like the Netherlands or France. But if you’re paying a visit to either of these countries, stopping in Belgium should definitely be added to your travel itinerary – even if it’s just for a day trip or two.

Cities in Belgium are typically much smaller than other major cities in Europe, so I found that you don’t need as much time in one particular place. You can choose a city to base yourself in and visit several destinations, all in one trip. Whether you’re based in Brussels or in the North of France, there are plenty of accessible spots to visit in Belgium that you should not overlook!

Belgium has something to offer at all times of the year – from flower fields in spring to colorful foliage in fall. However, shoulder season, similar to most European destinations, offers fewer crowds and more affordable prices. Personally, I loved visiting Belgium during the Christmas market season; its a really magical time of year to experience Belgium!

🧇 Waffles: You can’t visit Belgium without trying the legendary waffles! Typical Belgian waffles are known as Liège waffles but did you know there are also Brussels waffles? Brussels waffles have a crispier exterior, and a very light, airy interior, while the Liège waffles are smaller and thicker. I’ve had both, and you can’t go wrong with either one!

🍟 Frites: Another Belgian specialty are fries. Many market stalls offer fresh, piping hot fries in a cone, often with a variety of unique dipping sauces—great for snacking as you stroll explore.

🍻 Beer: I can’t talk about local specialties without mentioning beer!

🍫 Chocolate: Last but definitely not least, Belgian chocolates. Another icon of Belgium, you should definitely pay a visit to some local chocolatiers! This is probably the best and easiest souvenir to take home, and everyone will love it! BUT you have to make sure you are buying authentic Belgian chocolates!
